This paper provides in a concise form an overview of the development of regulation and guidance at both national and international levels, on international and multi-national initiatives for developing recommendations and common views on regulatory issues, as well as an overview of the experience of regulatory review of some of the safety studies produced during the last decade. This paper reviews the evolution of these initiatives and issues over the past decade or so focusing on the major areas addressed in the Cordoba workshop, notably, radioactive waste disposal criteria, performance assessment trends, and the conduct of the regulatory process.
