Workshop on Approaches to Estimation of the Costs of Nuclear Accidents

The workshop was held at the NEA Headquarters in Issy-les-Moulineaux on 28-29 May 2013, and gathered nearly 30 invited experts from 10 NEA member countries (Belgium, Finland, France, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Spain, Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom), Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the European Commission.

The participants, representing nuclear regulatory bodies, safety assessors, economists, radioprotection and industry communities, shared their experience regarding the consequences of nuclear accidents, with particular focus on costing aspects. The workshop was organised into the following three sessions:

  1. Appraisal of existing studies on the cost of the accidents at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi;
  2. Methodologies for estimating the costs of nuclear accidents; and
  3. Discussion on the cost categories (direct, indirect, induced) and perspectives of their evaluation.
