NEA survey: Status of education, training and outreach in member countries

This survey has been developed under the auspices of the NEA Global Forum on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy by its Working Group 2: Future of nuclear engineering education.

The NEA Global Forum recognises the important role nuclear education plays in shaping the nuclear energy workforce and ensuring the viability of nuclear energy in the global energy system. With this in mind, the Council of Advisors of the Global Forum is refining methods to attract more students to nuclear engineering and build the necessary talent pipeline from academia to industry. Central to these considerations is answering the question 'how to make nuclear education programmes more sustainable?'

The Working Group 2: Future of nuclear engineering education has been tasked explore this question and to propose concrete actions, to collect information about best practices, to make recommendations, as well as to develop online tools, training courses, and educational materials that could benefit the entire nuclear community.


With this survey, the Working Group, as a first step, aims to fulfill two main objectives: understanding the current status and challenges of nuclear education in different countries, as well as identifying current educational resources and training courses.

The Working Group aims to build knowledge and understanding of the current issues in the nuclear education sector and to foster discussion with different stakeholders in order to develop strategies and actions to address these challenges.

The responses regarding educational resources will be used to develop a resource page and posted publicly on the NEA website (without any information about the author of the resource), bringing together a variety of materials to help educators and young people to create a better awareness of nuclear energy and, in turn, attract more students.

It will also allow to understand what skills and competences the next generation needs and what training courses could be developed by the NEA.

Survey respondents are kindly invited to:

  • Answer all the questions in the survey, including open ones, if possible;
  • Make references to examples as often as possible;
  • Provide sources including links when relevan;
  • Provide contact details for follow-up in case clarifications are needed.

All respondents will be acknowledged in any resulting OECD NEA documents and reports.
