The NEA convened 70 experts to an international workshop on the safety assessment of nuclear installations for combinations of external hazards held on 11-13 September 2023. The event was organised by the NEA Working Group on External Events (WGEV) and the Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRISK), and hosted by the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France.
The workshop provided a forum to share experiences and exchange information on recent activities in this area. 27 presentations addressed technical areas such as regulatory frameworks, hazard identification and screening, deterministic and probabilistic hazard assessment, analysis and characterisation of integrated hazard impacts, as well as probabilistic safety assessment for combinations of external hazards. A panel discussion provided additional insights to develop a better understanding of the state of the art in the technical areas of the workshop. Lessons learnt from the workshop will aid further development of the technical basis, methods, and practical applications for currently operating and future nuclear facilities.
